Based on the events of November 1919, when in the aftermath of WWI, a part of the defeated German army still based in the newly independent Republic of Latvia, regrouped under the self-serving German General von der Golz. The rogue general, aided by Russian Colonel Bermont in initially masking the true identity of the aggressors from the Allies, ordered the renegade army of about 50,000 to attack Riga. His plan was to take over two of the diminutive Baltic States, Latvia and Estonia, and create a new Germanic state under his rule. Though vastly outnumbered, the Latvian army together with many non-military volunteers totaling some 11,000 men, miraculously managed to defend Riga by pushing back and defeat the Germans.

ALJOŠA 2008
Most monuments erected during the Soviet regime were taken away after Estonia regained its independence in 1991. The Bronze Soldier Alyosha, located in the center of Tallinn, remained in its place. For Estonian nationalists this monument was the symbol for Soviet occupation and marked the beginning of Stalinist repressions. However, for many Russians the monument was one of the few remaining symbols that connected them to Russia and Russian identity. Documentary Alyosha brings us the people who gathered to the Bronze Soldier in 2005-2007 and whose behaviour created a new line in our cultural memory. What mattered were the rituals around the monument, not the monument itself. Differences of opinion about history resulted in tragic conflicts and relocating the monument.

Powerplay at the Baltic seaside
The journalist, author and environmental activist Pasko focuses during his investigative research on the ecological risks and the energy policy implications of the Baltic Sea gas pipeline. Gazprom is the largest shareholder of the pipeline consortium Nord Stream. The film begins in the north of Russia, where as early as 2005 the first phase of the project was completed. The expectations of the local population regarding new jobs and gas pipes in their homes have vaporised and it starts to dawn on them that all they get is a pipeline passing right under their nose, but all the gas is destined for customers in Western Europe. In 2007 and 2008 Pasko travelled along the entire proposed route of the Nord Stream pipeline by land, and later along the coasts of Sweden, Finland and Germany. He spoke with Finnish, Swedish and German politicians, mayors, and environmental activists. Pasko’s research documents the impact of the pipeline on the environment and on the people who live along the route.

Told through an impelling father-son-story where hopes diverge and pride meets betrayal, we are left to consider whether what we see is actually the most desirable alternative to the current regime.
